Class 4 Shingles in Calgary: How to Get the Upgrade Priced Before You Sign

Three roofing quotes sit on your kitchen table. Maybe four. Every one of them lists a standard shingle, and not one of them mentions Class 4. Vami Roof Repair installs Class 4 impact-resistant shingles across Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane and Chestermere, and this page shows you how to get that upgrade priced, and possibly paid for, before you sign.

Class 4 shingles cost about $3,000 to $4,000 more than standard shingles on a normal-sized Calgary roof, based on our quotes. That is the money most homeowners either pay out of pocket or skip entirely, because nobody told them to ask their insurer first.

Newly installed asphalt shingle roof on a Calgary home, titled Ways to lower your home insurance premium or get incentives for Class 4 shingles – shop roofing the right way, by Vami Roof Repair Ltd

Ask your insurer before you sign the roofing contract, not after. The day you have a quote with a Class 4 line on it is the day to email your broker. It takes five minutes. This guide gives you the wording, the carrier programs we can document, and an honest account of when the answer comes back no.

What Are Class 4 Shingles, and Which Shingles Qualify? (UL 2218, in Plain Terms)

Class 4 names the top rating in UL 2218, the impact-resistance standard. A lab drops a 2-inch steel ball from 20 feet onto the same spot on the shingle, twice. The shingle passes only if the mat shows no crack, split, or tear on the back side. The difference between Class 3 and Class 4 shingles is the ball: Class 3 uses a 1.75-inch ball from the same 20-foot drop, roughly 40% less impact energy than the Class 4 test.

Most Class 4 products also carry ASTM E108 Class A fire, the highest fire classification. Common Class 4 shingles we install in Calgary include Malarkey Vista, built on NEX polymer-modified asphalt with 3M smog-reducing granules, GAF Timberline AS II and Timberline UHDZ, Owens Corning Duration FLEX and Duration STORM, and IKO Nordic. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety lists impact-rated roofing as a core requirement of its IBHS FORTIFIED standard.

Class 4 dramatically reduces hail damage. It does not eliminate it. The 30 to 50 mm stones Calgary storms regularly produce can still bruise mats and strip granules.

What Your 3 or 4 Calgary Roofing Quotes Actually Say

Homeowners show us their other quotes constantly. The pattern repeats across Calgary NW, NE, SW and SE.

  • IKO Cambridge Class 3

The default spec on most Alberta quotes.

  • Owens Corning Duration Class 3

Note the missing FLEX or STORM suffix.

  • GAF Timberline HDZ Class 3

Often written as the premium option.

  • BP shingles Class 3

In the lines typically quoted here.

No impact class appears anywhere on the page. No Class 4 alternate. No price delta. You cannot ask your broker about an upgrade you cannot price, so the question never gets asked and the money stays on the table.

What We Do Differently: A Class 4 Line on Every Quote

Every Vami Roof Repair quote carries a Class 4 line item with its own price, next to the standard option. You see both numbers before you decide. On a normal-sized roof the Class 4 line sits about $3,000 to $4,000 above the standard shingle. We do not bury it, and we do not treat it as an upsell you have to negotiate for. Class 4 is also a system, not just a bundle of shingles: matching ridge cap, metal vents instead of plastic, heavier valley metal, and the underlayment the manufacturer specifies. Skip a component and the warranty is void.

Kole Perkeqi and Vlash inspect every job personally. We run HAAG-certified inspectors, 15-plus years in Calgary, our own crew with no subcontractors, $2M liability coverage and active WCB. We supply the photo documentation and the itemized quote. Your broker or adjuster remains the authority on your policy. We are not insurance advisors, and we do not pretend to read your wording for you.

The One Email to Send Before You Sign (Template)

What to ask your insurance company before replacing a roof: send this email to your broker before you sign the roofing contract, while the Class 4 option can still be priced in. The whole process takes six steps:

  1. 1 Get a Class 4 line item in writing, with the product name and the price difference against the standard shingle.
  2. 2 Email your broker and copy your adjuster if a claim is already open. Attach the quote.
  3. 3 Ask four questions: upgrade provision, roof limitation endorsement, premium or deductible credit, and ACV or RCV settlement. The template in this section has the exact wording.
  4. 4 Request the answer in writing, with the form number of any endorsement they cite.
  5. 5 Confirm the deadline. Upgrade allowances and loss-mitigation provisions usually apply before work starts, not after.
  6. 6 Compare the written answer against the quote, then sign.

Subject: Class 4 shingle upgrade, policy number and claim number if one is open

I am replacing my roof and have an itemized quote attached showing a Class 4 (UL 2218) impact-resistant option alongside the standard shingle. Before I sign, please confirm in writing:

  1. 1)Does my policy include a loss mitigation or upgrade provision that contributes to the Class 4 difference?
  2. 2)Does my policy carry a roof limitation endorsement, and does Class 4 change how a future roof claim settles?
  3. 3)Is a premium discount or a lower hail deductible available for a documented Class 4 roof, even if I pay the difference myself, and what proof do you need?
  4. 4)Is my roof currently settled at actual cash value or replacement cost value, and would Class 4 change that?

Please cite the form number and date of any endorsement you reference.

Which Alberta Insurers Help Pay for Class 4: Carrier by Carrier

Which insurers help pay for a Class 4 upgrade in Alberta? Three have published programs: Intact, Desjardins and Aviva. Two more, TD and Wawanesa, have contributed on our Calgary files. Intact publishes a Roof Limitation Endorsement (form 78401, 05-24) that does two things. Its Loss Mitigation Coverage contributes a capped amount toward upgrading the roof or siding to a recognized hail-resistant material, Class 4 asphalt shingles included, if the work is finished within 2 years of the loss. Class 4 also slows roof depreciation on a claim: under the same endorsement, after year 11 Class 4 shingles lose value at half the annual rate of standard asphalt. The shingle class changes how your next claim settles.

Desjardins and Aviva both publish hail programs for Alberta that contribute a capped amount after a covered loss toward replacing the roof with Class 4 asphalt shingles, and in Desjardins' case toward hail-resistant siding as well. Aviva also carves Class 4 shingles out of its age-adjusted roof settlement. Amounts, eligible areas and conditions are set by each carrier, change without notice, and apply only after an insured loss, so ask your broker for the current wording.

With TD and Wawanesa, we have seen upgrade contributions and discounts applied on Calgary jobs. That is our experience from files we documented, not published policy, and we will not attach a figure to it.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada says a growing number of insurers now offer financial help to install resilient roofing after a claim, and it tells brokers to ask the carrier about an upgrade contribution instead of a like-for-like repair. An Alberta Superintendent of Insurance survey of 38 residential insurers, presented in September 2025, found every one of them now applies a higher deductible to hail and has introduced limited payment terms, and three set coverage blackout zones in the highest-risk areas. Hail deductibles that used to sit at $1,000 now run $2,500 to $5,000, and a resilient home can qualify for a $2,500 hail deductible where a standard home gets $10,000.

The City of Calgary Resilient Roofing Rebate is no longer available. It paid $3,000 per home toward Class 4 roofs, about 1,600 of them, then ended in May 2022 when the money ran out with more than 1,500 applicants still on the waitlist. It has not come back. Today the only party likely to contribute to your upgrade is your insurer, and only if you ask.

We can't promise your claim gets approved. Adjusters respond to documentation, not opinions.

Why It Is Worth Asking in Calgary's Hail Alley

Are Class 4 shingles worth it in Calgary? For most roofs we quote, yes, and the reason is the storm record. The Insurance Bureau of Canada and CatIQ put insured losses from the August 5, 2024 Calgary hailstorm at roughly $3.25 billion, ranking it behind only the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire among Canadian insured catastrophes. The June 13, 2020 Calgary hailstorm cost more than $1.2 billion. Alberta has had a major hailstorm every year for a decade, about $6 billion in insured hail losses over the last five years, and five of Canada's ten costliest disasters.

MNP's 2026 study for the Insurance Bureau of Canada found hail accounts for 30% to 68% of a home insurance premium in Alberta's highest-risk areas, which sit in and around Calgary, and that hail-resistant roofing and siding can cut that premium by up to 50%. The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction reviewed the City rebate and found about $13 million in avoided damage for $5.25 million spent, roughly 3 to 1, with the shingles paying for themselves in about five years. This corridor gets hit again.

Three levers beyond the upfront cheque:

  • ✓ Premium and deductible. A documented Class 4 roof can qualify for an ongoing discount that compounds every renewal, and with some carriers a lower hail deductible.
  • ✓ Settlement basis. Actual cash value (ACV) pays the depreciated value of your roof. Replacement cost value (RCV) pays what a new roof costs today. Class 4 can affect which one you get, because it depreciates slower and some carriers exclude it from age adjustment. Some carriers have moved roofs over 15 years old to ACV.
  • ✓ Resale. Homes by Avi made Class 4 shingles standard on every new detached home it builds in Alberta from August 1, 2026. Buyers notice.

When Your Insurer Says No to Class 4

Sometimes the broker comes back with nothing. No allowance, no discount, no rebate. It happens. A policy settled at actual cash value, a claim already cash-settled, a prior claims history, or a carrier without the endorsement can all close the door.

Ask a second question before you give up. If you pay the Class 4 difference yourself, does your premium or your hail deductible change at renewal, and what proof do they need? Usually that is the invoice naming the product and its UL 2218 Class 4 rating. In our experience, some carriers have lowered the premium on a self-funded Class 4 roof because that roof is less likely to produce a hail claim. Others have not. Get the answer in writing either way. With IBC putting hail at 30% to 68% of a Calgary premium, a credit on that portion can recover a good part of the $3,000 to $4,000 over a few renewals, even when the insurer contributes nothing up front.

Calgary homeowners comparing notes on r/Calgary in September 2026 reported the whole range: no change in premium, a few dollars a month, a few hundred dollars a year, a one-time rebate, and in one case a lower hail deductible instead of a discount. Two patterns stood out. Some carriers only credit specific Class 4 product lines, so name the exact shingle when you ask. And the deductible now matters more than the premium: hail deductibles of $5,000 to $10,000 came up again and again, and a Class 4 roof that avoids a single claim pays for itself on the spot.

Then decide on the spread alone. If Class 4 adds $3,000 to $4,000 over 20-plus years of Calgary hail, many homeowners take it anyway. If it does not pencil out, install the standard shingle. We will quote both either way, and we will not push.

Class 4 Shingles and Insurance FAQ

Does insurance pay for a Class 4 shingle upgrade? +

Sometimes, and only if you ask before you sign. Intact, Desjardins and Aviva publish programs that contribute toward Class 4 after a covered loss, and we have seen TD and Wawanesa contribute on Calgary files. No carrier pays automatically.

Will a Class 4 roof lower my home insurance premium if I pay for it myself? +

A Class 4 roof sometimes lowers the premium, and sometimes lowers the hail deductible instead. In our experience some carriers have done one or the other on a documented Class 4 roof, and others have not. Ask before you sign and get the answer in writing. Vami Roof Repair Ltd provides the photo documentation and the installation report that prove to your insurer you have a Class 4 rated roof, with the product name and UL 2218 rating on the invoice.

Can I get Class 4 shingles without an insurance claim? +

Yes. We price the Class 4 line on every quote, claim or no claim. The carrier programs above apply only after a covered loss, but the premium and deductible questions apply either way.

Can I ask my insurer for the Class 4 upgrade after I sign the roofing contract? +

You can ask, but it is usually too late. Most upgrade and loss-mitigation provisions apply before work begins. Our quote already carries the Class 4 line, so you can send the email the same day you receive it.

Does Class 4 cost more to install? +

Material costs more. Labour is comparable on most Calgary homes. On our quotes the difference is about $3,000 to $4,000 on a normal-sized roof.

Do Class 4 shingles stop hail damage? +

No. They reduce mat fracture and granule loss substantially. Large stones still cause damage.

How does an adjuster decide between roof repair and replacement after hail? +

By inspection and hit count. A HAAG-certified inspector marks a 10 by 10 foot test square on each roof facet and counts the hail hits inside it. If a square shows 10 or more hits, that facet typically qualifies for replacement under the test-square method adjusters use. A Class 4 roof is far less likely to reach that count.

Does the Class 4 warranty cover hail? +

Usually not. Most manufacturer warranties exclude hail damage, Class 4 lines included. UL 2218 is a lab performance rating, not a warranty, which is why the insurance conversation matters more than the brochure.

Which carriers have paid toward the upgrade? +

Intact's endorsement and the Desjardins and Aviva hail programs are published. With TD, Wawanesa and others we have seen contributions on Calgary files, but that is our experience, not their policy wording. Your broker can confirm what your policy says.

The roofing crew was amazing. They had the entire roof done in 3 days, and by the end of the job, other than a great new roof, you could not tell they were even there.
